Rogue was bored. She'd had a very boring day at the office, spending most of her time on the phone with the directors of various shelters and soup kitchens, and very little with the kids. Now she was stretched out on her couch, the remote in her hand, and her laptop open on the coffee table. She flipped through the channels, finding nothing even remotely interesting. She flipped it to the Discovery Channel and turned it down, leaning up to grab her laptop.
The awkward silence was broken by her phone ringing. Rogue's heart started pounding as she reached for it. It was his ring.
She swallowed hard and flipped the phone open. There was a slight pause before she said anything. "Hey." A thousand words were contained in those three letters, words she couldn't say, words he couldn't hear.
"Marie." She could hear music and chatter in the background, and knew he was in a bar. "I'm sorry."
She closed her eyes, biting her lip. "Me too." She takes a deep breath and opens her eyes again, focusing on her hands. "You haven't even been here to inspect my new apartment. I'm hurt." The words were said jokingly, meant to cut the tension.
Logan laughed. The sound was comforting, a familiar touchstone in this strange place. "You've only been there, what, a month? You can take care of yourself, so you always tell me." The last sentence had a slight edge to it.
"Logan, that's not fair." The argument was old, and she knew it wouldn't be the last time. "Just because I don't need you to protect me doesn't mean I don't," she took a deep breath, "doesn't mean I don't want you to try."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line before he answered. "What are you saying, Marie? Because hell if I can figure out what you want from me half the time." His voice was soft, sounding almost hurt. "You know I just want to do right by you."
"God, Logan. I'm sorry I ain't perfect. Neither of us are. I know that." She paused, collecting her thoughts. So many things she wanted to say, but... "Just come visit me when you get a chance, okay? Please?" Rogue hated that she could hear the need in her voice; she felt so weak when she talked to him.
"I will. I promise I'll try to visit you for Valentine's. I've got a real good lead up here, and I can't afford to lose it right now." He sighed. "I want to visit you sooner."
Rogue nodded into her phone, even though she knew he couldnt' see it. "Maybe I'll take a weekend and come see you."
She could almost hear the smile in his voice. "Yeah. It's real pretty up here. Remember that Christmas we spent up here?"
Rogue's own smile was huge. "How could I forget?" She bit her lip, remembering every moment of those few weeks.
"Marie, I...I gotta go." The hesitation in his voice was obvious.
"Yeah, you go. Do, well, whatever you do." She paused. "I love you Logan," she added quietly.
"I love you, Marie. I'll see you as soon as I can. Bye."
"Bye," she whispered, cradling the phone next to her ear. She held it there for several moments after he hung up, alternately berating herself for breaking down and being giddy about him coming back. She knew this wasn't the healthiest of relationships, but God knew she couldn't stay away from him. She tossed her phone on the table and pulled a blanket over her. She had no desire to climb the stairs and sleep in her big, empty bed tonight.
