The majority of these drabbles were written for
Firefly 100, a weekly Firefly drabble comm that I mod. It's really a great writing exercise. For the ease of reading, I've collected all my drabbles here, since they're far too short to need their own page. Newest drabbles will be at the bottom, and all are exactly 100 words (minus title and headings) unless noted.
Title: Untitled
Characters: Jayne, crew
Prompt: Beginnings
Gorram, he'd landed a sweet job. The captain, Mal, showed him around, pointing out the kitchen, the common area, and his bunk. The ship was old and sorta rickety, but the crew seemed alright. And the money was good.
And then there were the women. Gorram, the women! Zoë, who could (and would) probably kill him with her bare hands; Inara, even if he couldn't afford a tea party with her; and Kaylee, pretty little Kaylee. She smiled at him across the dinner table that night, being all cheerful and pretty and just gorram sexy as hell.
Yep. Sweet job.
Title: Patience
Characters: Jayne, Kaylee
Prompt: Patience
"Please, girl, I'm begging you here."
Kaylee grinned wickedly. "We slept awful late. I have things to fix, and I'm pretty sure you got somethin' to do."
Jayne whimpered. "No, no I surely don't. Get your ass back here 'fore I have to drag you!"
Instead of following orders, she picked up her shirt and slipped it on. The hem did little to cover her bare bottom, and the sight elicited a low growl from the bunk. "Kaylee, you're gonna kill me with want if you don't get back here."
Grinning, she bent over for her pants. "Patience, Jayne. Patience."
Title: Pertinent
Characters: Jayne, River
Prompt: Temperance
"Drinking is bad for you."
The girl's voice was soft, but it echoed in the silent mess and made Jayne jump. "Do you care?"
She circled the table, smiling in that crazy way she had. "I like you healthy." She dropped gently into the chair across from him, staring into his eyes.
"Didn't seem to matter when you cut me."
Her expression didn't change. "Wasn't pertinent then."
"Pertinent? What the hell does that mean?"
"Your health wasn't relevant to my state of mind then." River leaned across the table and traced his jaw lightly with her finger. "It is now."
Title: Missing Something
Characters: Mal, Zoë
Prompt: Taste
Apples just don't taste the same anymore. Ever since the war, that awful, fateful war, Zoë can't bite into one, and she thinks she's missing something. There's something visceral about crunching into the flesh, tearing it out with strong teeth, the juice making sticky trails as it slides across skin, something that can't be replaced with the sharp slice of metal.
She told Mal this once, the year after the Serenity Valley. He shook his head, pressing the knife through the red skin. "Doesn't seem right, does it?"
"It's like I'm back in that trench, every time."
"Yeah. Me too."
