Anita was in the hospital with second-degree burns on her back, and I couldn't even go visit her. Big, bad Larry Kirkland, apprentice animator and vampire slayer hopeful, and all I could do was sit. The last week had drained me more than any amount of magic I'd ever done.
I'd been so angry with Anita for trying to protect me, for trying to keep me out of the loop. But finally, at the end, I'd understood. I'd seen the horrors that made up her life, and realized she saw in me her lost innocence. I couldn't begrudge her that.
